...I don't know any French, and we will immigrate to Montreal next month. Do you think I will have lots of difficulties talking to people or find a job? You can get by in many parts of Montreal speaking only English (talking to people, shopping, day-to-day stuff), it's just that you'll miss so much of what the city is about. French is in the majority here, and to understand the cultural, political, and social makeup of the city, you've got to know a little of the main spoken language (and it will greatly improve your odds in finding a job). Don't rush to find a place to live east of the Main (Boulevard Saint-Laurent); you're more likely to find unilingual francophones there. For anglos, it's still best to stick to the western suburbs, at least at first. Most folks here are supportive of anyone who makes an effort to speak French - and English is often there as a backup (a joke about life in Montreal is that the best way to get someone to speak English is to begin speaking to them in poor French; they will immediately switch to English when they see you're having difficulty). Fortunately, learning the basics of French (especially the hybrid Montreal French) is not difficult - when you get here, find a good course at one of the universities, start watching French television or reading magazines in French, put on French radio stations, and it'll start to filter in. I'd like to know the official opening date of Montreal's metro, and how many stations there were at the beginning. Mayor Jean Drapeau announced the metro system officially open at 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 14, 1966. The fare was 20¢. We know that the content of our website is primarily in English. This is not because we wish to make a particular statement, or to ignore the reality of the French language and culture of Quebec. We're a small privately owned enterprise, founded by mainly English-speaking people, and we currently do not have the resources to translate articles we publish nor to commission articles in French. As we expand, we intend to seek out more French-language writers, and to present all our content in both languages. Please bear with us. Hi, I'm from Germany. Last week there was a report about Montreal telling that all citizens of the town have to move to a new apartment on a special day, caused by an ancient rule of former times. I couldn't believe that. Neither did my friends. So what's about that? Traditionally, apartment leases here go from July 1 to June 30, so people who want to move usually do so around July 1. This date is also Canada Day, a legal holiday, so between the parade and the moving vans, it can get pretty chaotic here at that time. People can move into new apartments whenever they like, according to their agreement with the landlord. Students often look for new digs in August and September, for instance. Landlords also make leases for different periods, and of different durations; it's just that July 1 to June 30 is the most common arrangement. It used to be traditional to have a lease beginning in May, but in 1973 the provincial government decided to switch moving day from May 1 to July 1 to avoid disrupting the school year. I am very interested about Montreal in Canada. Can you please add me to your mailing list if you have one, or tell me of any newsgroups that exist? We don't currently host a mailing list here at montreal.com, but you might
want to have a look at these newsgroups related to Montreal and Quebec: Can you direct me to an area on your website that best shows me what I can find in Old Montreal? Infotouriste Vieux-Montréal (Old Montreal), Infotouriste Centre 1001, rue de Square-Dorchester Touriste Information for Quebec and Montreal, 1-800-363-7777 Opéra de Montréal Québec's motto (from the Government of Québec site): The motto of Québec has appeared officially at the bottom of Québec's coat of arms since 1939, but was in use as far back as 1883, the product of the imagination and the initiative of the designer of the Parliament Building. Eugène-Étienne Taché intended to place the province's coat of arms above the main door of the Parliament Building, and to inscribe under it a motto of his own devising: "Je me souviens" (I remember). He prepared his plans accordingly, and they were appended to the building contract signed on February 9, 1883 under an executive order-in-council dated January 22 of the same year. The Québec government thereby "ratified" the motto created by Eugène-Étienne Taché. The coat of arms above the main door of the Parliament Building is, however, not the one designed by Taché. The base of the main tower underwent major repairs in the early 1960s, and the coat of arms that had been there since the façade was built, in the mid-1880s, was unfortunately replaced with the coat of arms in use since 1939. What does the motto "Je me souviens" mean? Several authors have sought the true import of what is perhaps too simple a sentence. André Duval read it as the response of a French-Canadian subject to the motto of the Marquess of Lorne, Governor General of Canada, which can be seen in the hall of the Parliament Building: "Ne obliviscaris" (Be careful not to forget). Conrad Laforte believed that Taché was inspired by the Canadien errant of Antoine Gérin-Lajoie: "Va, dis à mes amis/Que je me souviens d'eux" (Go tell my friends/That I remember them). These recent interpretations (1970) seem to have nothing in common with those that were current at the turn of the century among the contemporaries of the creator of the motto and that were more likely to have fuelled his thoughts, unfortunately never put down on paper. Judge Jetté, in a speech in 1890, evoked the feeling of Canadians when the French flag reappeared on the river in 1855: "Oui, je me souviens, ce sont nos gens" (Yes, I remember, these are our people). According to Pierre-Georges Roy, this motto reflects "clearly the past, the present and the future of the only French province in the Canadian Confederation". The opinion of Ernest Gagnon also deserves consideration, for he was the secretary of the Department of Public Works at the time and knew Taché well. In an appendix to the Department's annual report, Gagnon wrote that the motto admirably summarized "la raison d'être du Canada de Champlain et de Maisonneuve comme province distincte dans la Confédération" (the raison d'être of the Canada of Champlain and Maisonneuve as a distinct province in the Confederation). Gagnon's interpretation is probably very close to Taché's intentions. In designing the decoration of the Parliament Building, Taché wanted to render homage to the men and women who marked the history of Québec. There is probably no need to delve deeper into the matter. This entire building is a monument dedicated to the history of Québec and, through the motto, Taché sought simply to express in a few words what he planned to immortalize in stone, wood and bronze." Can you please tell me if the outdoor market is open every weekend during the summer. Montreal's two main outdoor markets are the Atwater and Jean-Talon.

Île Notre-Dame has become the direct property of the province of Quebec and expansion of the Casino seems likely; likewise, La Ronde now belongs to the Six Flags amusement park consortium. The park on Île Sainte-Hélène is still a pleasant place for a walk, though. Parc Jean-Drapeau official site Could you tell me the best patisserie in Montreal.
