Our times need dreams
First Peoples' Festival 2004
June 10-21
"It all comes from dreams. Among others, the drum is our link to the essential universe. And the drum echoing in our hearts reminds us that the purpose of dreams is to become reality."
The title and prefatory statements in the program of the Montreal's First Peoples' Festival beautifully sum up this important yearly event. With its 12 wide-ranging days of music, film, art, and culture, the festival is as diverse an event as the people and cultures represented. Now in its 14th year, the Montreal's First Peoples' Festival far surpasses any quaint views of native dancing or arts'n'crafts for tourists.
The fest is native produced and acted films, art exhibits, classical, modern, and traditional music, storytelling, workshops - and yes, dancing and crafts.
It all leads up to June 21, National Aboriginal day,
